Medication at School

Administration of Medications during school hours

Parents are encouraged to arrange medication schedules so all medications are given at home whenever possible.   If medication must  be administered during school hours,  please read the following:  

  • Medication can be given at school only with specific written directions (medical order) from a licensed prescriber, and with a signed request from the parent or guardian.  Use the  Medication Authorization Form, if possible.
  • This includes all prescription medication, over-the-counter medication and herbal preparations.   
  • The medication must be provided in the original pharmacy container with the original label intact.
  • A parent, guardian, or other responsible adult must deliver the medication to the student's school.  Children are not permitted to bring prescription or over-the-counter medicine to school) 
  • Acetaminophen (generic Tylenol), Ibuprofen (generic Advil or Motrin) and Benadryl (for allergic reactions) may be dispensed in the nurse's office with the written permission  from the parent or guardian on the emergency contact form.
  • All medications must be picked up from the nurse's office during the last week of school.

School Law  allows students to carry inhalers and/or Epi-Pens.  Written approval from both the physicain and parent is required to carry an inhaled asthmatic medication or Epi-pen and to self-medicate.  These self-carry forms can forms can be found on the District website Self-Carry Medical Form
